Hobbies – yes, they are still a thing in 2023

Posted on May 22, 2023 by Adulting Abroad

As a 8am-6pm girlie, corporate life am I right?, sometimes it is hard to disconnect from the virtual world. Whilst you are in a meeting, you have your phone nearby scrolling through the gram and nodding as people speak..and after work, you go one your phone to “catch up” even though you are up-to date with everything on the socials… hence repetitive virtual agenda, which not only damages your eyes but sometimes, your brain and mental health.

What can I do with my time that doesn’t involve being on my phone?

If you are not married or have kids, then like me, we have a lot of free time in our hands. Of course, I contemplate the idea to get a second job, not only because everything is so expensive; but also, because I feel that I waste time. As a result, I found things that can make my brain stimulate while creating wonderful pieces of art. Diamond painting has been MY THING. I am a 26 year old girl, whose love for making bracelets when she was 10 is still alive. Therefore, I asked myself, what did I do when I didn’t have a phone? well, CRAFTS AND ARTS.

Of course as we are aging, we also need to do things that simultaneously will bring benefits to our health (so we can all look like JLO when we are old). Hence, Diamond painting is said to improve brain focus, hand flexibility, improve mental health and spark creativity!

I started to really how satisfying it is to FINISH a whole picture of this tiny little diamonds. I know I sound like a “Oma” but this has been one way to relieve stress from work, put some Netflix in the background to keep yourself from feeling alone (hahaha) and if you want, you can sell your finish product via online platforms.

Other hobbies to do?

If you don’t like dabbing 1000 diamonds in a frame, you can also PAINT! there’re a lot of different painting by numbers, you can choose a really nice picture of say dogs and paint by the number (MY OTHER ULTIMATE FAVE). This activity also doesn’t require being on your phone that much; and before you know it, you have spend hours creating PARTFECTION (get it?)

And if you don’t want to do anything with your hands (also fair), you can choose the classic read a book. I have been reading Lars Kepler book series about detective Joona Lina, which is FIRE. Of course, it is about murder and very descriptive and scary but 1000% worth it. Honestly when are they making a movie about this series???

Conclusion

Basically, do something other than scrolling through your phone. Before you know it, you will get old, at least you can leave your pieces of art to friends or relatives as a way to remember you.

The scary part of moving away is whether you will The scary part of moving away is whether you will loose that connection with your family, will it be weird? Will we be strangers?

I think expats are one of the strongest people in the world. They are the ones that have to go reunite with family with an expiry date, dreading the days of that return flight ticket.

Luckily for me, nothing changes but makes me more connected to my parents. However, I am already counting down the days to that one way ticket dream to reunite after conquering Europe for a bit longer.

Summer holidays have become my favorite season of the year, to get on that plane and be at home again ✈️
