If you have been in the Netherlands for more than five years or so, then it is most likely that you want to become a permanent resident (visa wise) or even, become a citizen. Well, what to do? Below I give you a few information that might be useful for your upcoming change.
Should I give up my native passport?
When it comes to NL, people are not allow to be dual citizens, thereby, if you decide to have a dutch passport, you are required to give up your native passport. For some people, this might be what they want and the opposite for others. In my point of view, this is only an added benefit to those whose passports are not as useful (requires too many visas) compared to others.
I think this is more of a personal choice if you want to be a dutch citizen. For example, for Indonesians, it is not handy to give up their citizenship because otherwise they are not allowed to buy land in Indonesia. I would recommend to research what are the perks and disadvantages if you decide to give up your native passport.
Should I become a PR?
I am leaning more towards becoming a permanent resident. This is so ideal because then I don’t have to give up my passports. I think if you are paying taxes (30%), then this should be given automatically but of course I don’t make the rules :).
This option is ideal for those that have been in the country for a long time. As well, if you ever loose your job, then you don’t need to rely on the work visa.
Requirements for both options:
You can check the website “inburgeren” and also call them. They are able to explain it to you based on your situation. For this year, the level of exam is A2 & additional exams on the dutch culture + job hunting (not applicable if you already work here for a long time). However, for 2024, this level will rise to B1.
The perks of taking it this year, is that it is doable if you are not fluent. However, if you decide to take it next year, you only need to take the language exam (not the culture exam).
I think the best choice is to consider where you are right now and see what fits better. You do have to pay for it at own cost.
Don’t be afraid to call them and ask for some tips :)!
Good luck!
